The winter here is cold and rainy, so the climate is certainly not ideal. There are people in the neighborhood who have moved here from the UK. The reasons for their relocation are diverse, but the common opinion is that New Zealand is bright and has a good climate. This refers to the period from spring until just before winter begins, and I personally dislike the long winter here. However, I find it strange that none of the many immigrants from the UK ever complain about it. The climate in the UK must be quite bad, I suppose.
According to my daughter, who recently returned from a trip around the world, the weather in the UK is always gloomy, the food is not particulary delicious, and people live quietly in small houses — she says she could never live there. Now that she mentioned it, many of the British people here seem to complain a lot and come across as stingy. But I must admit, their sense of humor is quite entertaining — they seem to spend the entire day joking around. It almost feels like 80% of their communication is done through jokes. I’ve never been to the UK myself, but perhaps they rely on humor to lift their spirits because the weather is so depressing.
It seems to me that climate deeply shapes a country’s culture. Having lived in Brazil for a long time, I can say it’s truly a wonderful place, with a calm, pleasant climate and no worries about earthquakes or typhoons.
